Cowboy Recreation and Nature Trail
Construction
The trail from Norfolk to Valentine is constructed of crushed limestone that is small enough to fit through a ¼ inch mesh. Thickness generally is 4-inches thick although through time thinning occurs and new material is required. The limestone is dampened and compacted to a very hard state.
Four communities have concrete trails that pass through them and are from 1 to 3 miles in length. Those communities include Norfolk, O’Neill, Ainsworth and Valentine.
Construction began in 1996 with funding from the Recreational Trails Program and even more so the Federal Enhancement Program administered by the Nebraska Department of Roads. These programs have been instrumental in developing most of the trails for recreation and travel in the state of Nebraska. The Federal Enhancement Program also includes funding for many of the established Byways and Scenic enhancements around the state.
All future development of the Cowboy Recreation and Nature Trail will stem from the availability of funding for operation and maintenance of any new construction.
