Nebraska's newest large reservoir and the site of a major fish hatchery, Calamus offers prime fishing and camping in the heart of the Sandhills, 6 miles NW of Burwell. The modern campgrounds have 122 pads with 30/50 amp electrical hookups, plus 55 non-pad sites, modern restrooms, showers, dump station and water. Other facilities include: Unsupervised swimming beach, 5 boat ramps, vault toilets, picnic tables and fish cleaning stations. The area encompasses 11,720 acres, including the 5,124-acre lake.

Another highlight is a trip to the Calamus State Fish Hatchery, located below the dam. The hatchery has self-guided tours and displays on raising fish and other topics.

Calamus is a 5,124-acre lake with an adjacent 1,188 acres of land. The area offers power boating, hiking, picnicking, swimming and Homestead Knolls campground features a shower house, electrical pads and primitive camping. Nunda Shoals campground does not have access to showers but offers electrical pads.

All campers must register. Reservations are accepted. Reservations are taken for 50% of the modern camping at Nunda Shoals and Homestead Knolls campgrounds. Reservations are taken up to 1 year in advance of arrival day.
