A record of number of elk permits (303) were authorized in 2012. Permit refunds were requested prior to elk season by 19 Pine Ridge hunters (7 bull permits, 12 cow tags) with permits in units where fires had moved elk off the land they had intended to hunt. Bull harvest (105), total harvest (191), and harvest success (67%) set new records. Of note: Nebraska hunters have harvested 1,300 elk since the first season in 1986. More than half have been harvested in the past four years.
