Closure Information for Douthit and West Ash Fire AreasFollowing the Region 23 Complex fires in northwest Nebraska, the U.S. Forest Service has taken steps to provide for public safety and resource protection while we assess the impacts caused by the fires. On September 6, 2012, the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands implemented a forest closure order that restricts access to the affected portions of the forests and grasslands burned in the recent fires. During this closure, the Forest Service will be addressing risks across the area. The closed area will be reopened in stages with updates and modified restrictions as soon as we can safely do so. During this time, the Forest Service asks for the public’s understanding and continued support in the wake of these fires. Already completed is an assessment in the area surrounding the Hudson-Meng Bison Kill Research and Visitor Center and it will reopen on Saturday 8, 2012 with limited restrictions. Also important to note, Permittees will be allowed to access the closed area given they are performing activities directly related to their permit. Everyone on the forests and grasslands is encouraged to be safe, use good judgment and reminded that fire danger is still extremely high in and around the Nebraska panhandle.
