The Commission has expanded efforts in the last few years to introduce youth and families to nature base outdoor recreation. Several thousand youth are introduced to hunting, shooting and aquatic sports each year through Expos, Hunter Education, Outdoor Skills Camps, and other educational events. Unfortunately, once the workshop is over, many of these students have no place to continue these newly learned skills.
In the summer of 2010 the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission initiated the construction of a multipurpose shooting range at Platte River State Park located on HWY 66 between South Bend and Louisville. This new facility will accommodate several shooting disciplines, including an archery range with shooting tower, a 50 yard - small bore rifle range and an indoor 10 meter pellet gun range.
This new facility will allow them to continue participation in various outdoor pursuits by providing a well-equipped and familiar facility that appeals to families and youth of all ages. The benefits to Platte River State Park will be a new network of park visitors drawn by the quality facility. This will greatly enhance park revenue and outdoor participation in those pursuits facilitated by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
Shotgun range
- Planned location—Next to Outdoor Heritage Education Complex and Southeast of Walter Scott Lodge
- Preliminary site prep began fall of 2010 with tree clearing and site grading -Utilized $9,190.63 from the Foundation account for materials
- Initiate construction of facilities: trap houses, etc. in the summer of 2011
- Rentable equipment; shotguns, ammo and clay targets
- Expenses will be offset with activity fees as allowed by federal funding sources, or partner sponsorships
- Range design incorporates proper drainage and catch basin for the containment of lead; to avoid contamination in the Platte Valley
- Opportunities for High School and 4-H Trap Shooting teams to utilize facilities for practice and competition
Current and future school and public programming will benefit greatly from the Outdoor Heritage Education Complex’s permanent structures allowing a safe and comfortable shooting experience for everyone
The RDR plan for Platte River State park does not end with the Outdoor Heritage Education Complex. Fishing and boating is an important factor in recruiting and maintaining anglers and boaters.
Capital improvements to the park will include:
- Earth work to shoreline of Jenny Newman lake for easier fishing access
- Create access points for kayaking and canoeing at Decker Creek
- Take out point for kayaks and canoes at Louisville State Park
- Floating dock and fishing pier
- Alum treatment of lake
- Canoe/kayak programs and rentals
- Fishing clinics
If you are interested in giving it a shot we have events planned that would be a great way to get introduced to what we have to offer.
